Verna Jean McCoy

Verna Jean McCoy went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 12, 2024. Jean was granted the gift of life on August 1, 1926 in the small community of Burkett in Coleman County, Texas to Hardy and Verna Elizabeth Strickland. Following the death of her mother, Verna Elizabeth, during childbirth, Jean was taken into the home of Grace (Verna's younger sister) and Sam Edington where she was lovingly raised from birth as one of their own children. In 1941, Jean met the love of her life, Raymond McCoy and they were married on June 6, 1942. They enjoyed a wonderful life traveling across the United States in a variety of travel trailers joined by many close friends and family. They visited almost every state in the union. Jean and Raymond were married just short of 70 years leaving a wonderful example of what true love and devotion looks like. Jean was totally devoted to her family Jean became a Christian at age 10 and throughout her life she was a faithful Christian and prayer warrior. Jean served her church in various roles in including Sunday School Teacher, Choir, Girls Auxiliary Leader (GAs), Women's Missionary Union, and Young Adult Sponsor. Before moving to Dallas to be near family, Jean and Raymond were long time members of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood, Texas. Jean worked for twenty-four years with the Ector County Independent School District as a secretary in the central business office, retiring in 1984. She was an accomplished artist, seamstress, and a voracious reader. Jean is survived by her loving son, Don McCoy and wife Melissa, granddaughter Amanda Gardner and husband Shayne, great-grandsons Jackson and Charlie Gardner all of Dallas, Texas, and granddaughter Emily McCoy and husband Jeff House of Charlotte, North Carolina. There will be a graveside celebration of life at Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early, Texas at 11:00 am, Friday - December 20, 2024 with Reverend Bill Allen officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Heritage Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scottish Rite for Children - Dallas, Texas, Coggin Avenue Baptist Church - Brownwood, or a charity of your choice.
