Ethel Hill

Ethel Faye Hill (Lovingly know as Granny Ethel) passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024, and walked into the arms of Jesus after 92 years of a beautiful and loving life. Ethel was born in Holder, Tx on June 7, 1932, to William M. and Linnie (Horton) Purcell. Ethel was the oldest and the only girl of the Purcell children. Ethel was blessed with four rowdy and protective brothers who throughout life were her best friend and they remained close till their deaths. As a young teen Ethel met and fell in love with Wayne Hill, and they were married on July 30, 1949. Wayne was in the service and stationed in Wisconsin, but they eventually settled in Brownwood, Tx. Wayne and Ethel were blessed with two boys, the oldest Ricky born in 1954, and two years later little brother Tony joined the family in 1956. Ethel had a lengthy career at the Feather Plant before taking time off to raise the boys and help take care of her husband who had been involved in a car accident. During those years her house was always filled with rowdy boys and was the house you never left without a full belly and a to go glass of her famous sweet tea. With that passion for cooking, she began a career at Northwest Elementary as one of the cooks. After many years she retired from Northwest in 1997. Granny enjoyed working outside in her yard and had the greenest thumb of anyone I've ever met. There isn't a memory I don't have of us being outside together whether it was in her giant garden picking all the vegetables or her protecting us from the bumble bees. She always said, "Miranda could tear up a pea patch faster than I've ever seen just trying to get away from the bumble bees" Granny had the best yard that was full of softest carpet grass and would allow me and Devin to play in the sprinkler for hours and hours just for us to be outside together. She enjoyed it outside until the very end listening to the birds and just breathing the fresh air. Granny Ethel also enjoyed sewing and could make just about anything. Granny also LOVED embroidery and spent hours and years making some of the most beautiful quilts. As mentioned above Granny loved to cook!! If you asked anyone in the family, she was the best cook in the world and we will miss her spoiling us with all the delicious foods and treats, from breakfast every morning and the gooiest chocolate/caramel cake and the most divine fudge she made every Christmas. If you asked Devin, he would say it was most definitely breakfast after staying the night or one of the many grilled cheese sandwiches he ate as soon as we walked in her door to stay the night. As our family grew Granny got the blessing of being a great granny but still lovingly known as "Granny Ethel" She continued the grilled cheese tradition as well as a new corn dog and brownie treats for the many afternoons Cameron and Carson would come to visit. In the last few years, her youngest grandson Noah moved back and he began the sleepover traditions that we all have enjoyed over the years. Those two developed a very special relationship and bond that continued until her passing. Ethel is survived by granddaughter Miranda Cockerell and husband Steven. Grandson Devin Hill and wife Misty. Great grandchildren Cameron Hill, Carson Hill, and Noah Cockerell. She is also survived by a special sister-in-law Nita Purcell of Bangs. A nephew Ronnie Purcell and wife Beckie, along with their children great nephews Josh and Ben Purcell. Ethel is proceeded in death by her parents William M. and Linnie Purcell, brother Dale Purcell and his wife Freda, brother Gary Purcell and brother Jim Purcell. She is also proceeded in death by her loving husband Wayne Hill, and both sons Ricky Hill and Tony Hill, along with a very special daughter-in-law Lydia. Ethel was also proceeded in death by numerous Aunts, Uncles, nephews, cousins, and very loving friends. We would like to extend the sincerest "Thank You" to Dr. Butka and his amazing staff for all the years they took the best care of our precious Granny Ethel. Thank you also goes to Songbird Lodge Nursing and Rehab along with Interim Hospice with a special thanks to Nurse Eva, CNA Tatum, CNA Tyler and Interim nurse Cirila. There will be a formal viewing at a Heritage Funeral Home on Thursday August 22, 2024, from 6:00 -8:00 PM and a small graveside service at Fairview Cemetery in Grosvenor, Tx on Friday August 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM.
