Dorothy B. Long

Dorothy Bernice Long, 91, of San Saba, Texas, after battling congestive heart failure for a number of years, passed away on December 5, 2012 at the hospital in Llano, Texas. Dorothy was born on June 27, 1921, in Cherokee, Texas. She was the oldest daughter of Grave and Mina Burke and only sister to Billie Louise Walker. Dorothy was raised in a Christian home and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cherokee, where she often played the piano during worship services. After graduating from Cherokee High School, Dorothy began her college education at Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas. After two years she transferred to Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas where she received a Bachelor Degree in Education. Upon graduation in 1943 she began working as a secretary at the San Marcos Army Air Field in San Marcos. The following year she moved to Houston, Texas and began working as the Chief Dietitian in the student cafeteria. While working at the University of Houston, Dorothy began working on her Master's Degree. In 1946 she met and married Raymond L. Long, who was also attending the University of Houston. In June of 1947 Dorothy and Ray had their only son, Raymond L. Long II. In 1949 Dorothy received her Master of Education from the University of Houston. Dorothy then began working for the Houston Independent School District as an elementary school teacher. As a teacher she taught every grade from first to sixth. Her excellence as a teacher was often recognized with achievement awards and accolades. After about twenty years of service she was selected to pioneer and develop the curriculum for a Reading Center/Clinic. Her success in the development of the Reading Center/Clinic was used as a model in numerous school districts through-out the state of Texas and nation. Dorothy retired from the Houston Independent School District in 1986. Shortly after her retirement she and Ray moved to San Saba, Texas, to take care of her ailing mother. Here they joined and became active member of the First Baptist Church of San Saba. After her mother passed away in 1993, Dorothy and Ray took over managing their family ranches and home site. In 2003, Dorothy's husband of fifty-seven years passed away and since then lived a peaceful life in San Saba.
