Bill L Turner

Bill Lamond Turner was born November 27, 1935 in Brady, Texas to Ira and Amy Lee Turner. He passed away September 21, 2019. Bill earned both a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. While there, he worked as a trainer with the UT baseball team coached by Bibb Falk, with whom he remained close friends until Coach Falk's death in 1989. Bill began a long teaching career in 1959 at West Texas State in Canyon where he was hired as both teacher and athletic trainer. After Canyon, he taught at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo before finally returning to Austin in 1962, where he remained the rest of his life teaching in Austin high schools. Bill and longtime friend and fellow teacher, Richard Powell, became partners in a small company producing communion cups for churches throughout the U.S. While starting to build a life and family in Austin in the 1960's, leisure for Bill often meant time spent on or around a lake. After marrying Edie in 1967, the couple prioritized the Austin lake life and purchased a lot on Lake Travis. While weekends and holidays were often spent enjoying the lake, the new property gave Bill the opportunity to partake in another one of his passions: building. Together, he and Edie spent many months constructing their dream cabin on the lake, and that cabin ultimately became a common weekend destination for Bill and his family into the 1980's. In 1982, Bill and Edie sold the cabin on Lake Travis and bought land closer to town on Lake Austin. It would eventually become Bill and Edie's retirement home, and it allowed Bill to spend every day close to the lakes that he loved. Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edie; a daughter, Amy Turner Camp and husband Hardin of Round Rock; a son, Travis Lamond Turner and wife Debbie Wallenstein of Austin; one granddaughter, Camryn Camp, and two grandsons, Chase Camp and Caden Camp of Round Rock. Graveside service will take place Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 10:00 am at Rest Haven Cemetery, Brady, Texas. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 10:00 am at Lakeway Church, Lakeway, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lakeway Church Building Fund, 2203 Lakeway Blvd, Lakeway, TX 78734.
