Ava Nell Eiler

Pearl Avanell (Johnson) Eiler, 84, of Pasadena, Texas, and formerly of San Saba, passed away on September 6, 2013. Visitation was held from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at Heritage Funeral Home in San Saba with services immediately following at 1:00 p.m. in Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with burial at San Saba Cemetery. Ava, as she was known to everyone, was born on November 26, 1928, in Locker, San Saba County, Texas, to Johnny Johnson and Rosa (Cochran) Johnson. She spent her childhood in Locker and went to high school in San Saba. Her family was devout Baptists and attended services at Locker Baptist Church. Ava had two older brothers, Dale and Doyal, one older sister, Faye, and a baby sister, Rita Beth. Her father ranched/farmed and was known for breaking horses. Her mother, Rosa, was a very determined woman of strong character. With strong parents and four siblings, Ava didn't get a lot of sympathy as a child, which resulted in her becoming very capable and independent. She was very knowledgeable of the Bible and could quote chapter and verse on any subject you named. If you had to use just one word to describe her, it would be tenacious. Ava married Herbert Beaumont (Doc) Eiler on May 16, 1944, in Goldthwaite, Texas. They were married until his death, at total of 57 years. Together they had three boys. The first was Jerry, born in October, 1946, followed by Gregg, in May, 1952, and finally, Johnson, born in December, 1959. Ava and Doc left San Saba in 1954 and relocated to Pasadena, Texas, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Ava worked hard at a local supermarket while Doc was self-employed in the construction business. She was promoted to butcher in the meat department of the store she worked in. She attended services at the Methodist Church in Pasadena for most of her years there, but, when her health failed her, she watched church services on television every Sunday. Ava spent her final few months at Clear Brook Crossing Nursing Home in Pearland, Texas. Her three sons were able to visit her during that time. She passed away at 3:03 a.m, September 6, 2013, and, as per her wishes, she was returned to San Saba County to be buried beside her husband. Ava was preceded in death by; her parents; her husband, Herbert "Doc" Eiler; and two brothers; Dale and Doyal Johnson. Survivors include; three sons; Johnson "John" Eiler of Pasadena, Texas; Gregg Eiler and Jerry Eiler, both of Houston; two sisters; Rita Strack, and husband Lou, of Ft.
