Al Machen

Alfred "Al" Machen, age 86, passed from this life into his Heavenly home on Sunday, September 26, 2021. Al was born on May 18, 1935, in the Lampasas County community of Nix to Milton George and Neva Maurea (Porter) Machen. Al served in the US Army immediately after the Korean Conflict. He was a longtime resident of McCulloch County, moving here in 1957. He married the love of his life, Bobbye Forehand, on November 8, 1957, in Lampasas, and they shared 64 years in life, laughter, love, and family. Al was a Christian man who was an elder of the Sunset Ridge Church of Christ and was devoted to his work with the Heart of Texas Bible Camp for over 50 years. He also was involved in his community and had served as Band Booster President. A hard-working man, Al's work ethic was unmatched by those both young and old. He had a one-job, 35-year career as a civil engineer for the Texas Highway Department. After his retirement, he worked for the Holloways and Heritage Funeral Home for 25 years. He loved ranching, his cows, and his goats. He also loved fishing, woodworking, and gardening. Al was the sweetest man you could ever meet, who spoke his mind when needed, but even that was done with kindness. Above all else, Al was a family man who loved each member of his family dearly, teaching them important life lessons. He imparted wisdom and God's love to each of them. Al was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Avilla Corbin, and son-in-law Lee Coffman. Left behind to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Bobbye Machen of Brady; son, Rick Machen and wife Debra of Kingsville, Texas; daughter, Suzanne Coffman of Brady; brother, Clifford Machen and Darlene Ward of Lampasas, Texas; sister, Sharon Moore and husband Buddy of Lampasas; four grandchildren, Mallory Dougherty and husband Sean, Kyle Machen, Bradley Coffman and Ryan Coffman; two great-granddaughters, Evelyn Dougherty and Corrie Dougherty; and numerous extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heart of Texas Bible Camp, c/o Sunset Ridge Church of Christ. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at Heritage Funeral Home of Brady. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 1, 2021, at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ with Virgil Webb, Minister, officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 PM in Senterfitt Cemetery near Lometa. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Heritage Funeral Home of Brady.
